Abstract

The grief of family members and loved ones who have lost a loved one to suicide is different from grief from any other cause. The great emotional impact, the stigma, feelings of shame and guilt, the lack of understanding of the event, and the constant thoughts focused on finding an explanation mean that the progression of grief does not follow the stages of normal grief. The loss of a loved one to suicide has physical and psychological consequences for the rest of the family, increasing the risk of suicide in another member. Therefore, an analysis of different bibliographic sources was conducted on the effects on the family environment caused by death by suicide. The study's analysis is organized into the following themes: the family after suicide, psychological consequences in the family, children and adolescents grieving due to suicide, normal grief, and pathological grief. The conclusion is that coping with the loss of a family member who committed suicide is, according to the research, "more difficult" compared to other forms of death. This difficulty arises because some suicides could have been prevented if attention had been paid to the signs, which is why family members and those close to them feel they could have been avoided.
